Before You Start:
Turn off the printer (for safety).
Wait a few seconds so nothing is moving inside.
Have both hands clean and dry.
1. Check the display or blinking lights
Some printers show exactly where the jam is on the screen.
If there’s a message like “Paper Jam in Tray 1,” note it — it helps.
2. Remove all loose paper
Take out the paper tray.
Remove any loose or crumpled sheets.
Don’t yank — pull gently to avoid tearing.
3. Open the printer doors/covers
Look for a back door, side door, or top lid (depends on the model).
Follow arrows or icons printed on the printer to find the jam location.
4. Pull the jammed paper gently
Use both hands to pull slowly in the direction the paper normally travels.
If it’s stuck halfway, open another cover to grab the other side.
Remove all small pieces — even tiny scraps can cause another jam.
5. Check the rollers
Rollers are the small rubber wheels that feed the paper.
If paper is wrapped around them, turn the roller slowly by hand to free it.
6. Reinstall paper properly
Fan the stack of paper before loading (prevents sticking).
Make sure paper is not bent, torn, or too thick for your printer.
Adjust the paper guides in the tray so they just touch the paper edges.
7. Close all covers and restart
Close every panel securely until it clicks.
Turn the printer back on.
Try a test print.
8. If jam happens again
Use a different batch of paper (sometimes paper is the problem).
Check the manual for your printer model (often online).
If jam is deep inside and unreachable, call IT or a printer technician.
